Where dogs walk
Grove Park, Weston Woods and the sands at Sand Bay

In summer the beach and promenade are packed with day-trippers, donkeys, arcades and fairground noise. A dog that stays calm around sudden sounds, ignores dropped chips and walks on a loose lead among crowds is a good ambassador. Practise at the quiet end of the prom and build up to the busier stretch.

Seasonal dog restrictions apply on some parts of seaside beaches, so check the signs and the council's rules before you let your dog loose on the sand. Wet sand, shells and glass can all cause injuries, and some dogs are tempted to eat seaweed or dead crabs. A strong leave-it is invaluable on the strandline.

Weston Woods climb the hill above the bay, with steep paths, tree roots and views of the estuary. Wildlife is plentiful, so keep your dog close and use a long line until recall is dependable. The woods are cooler and quieter than the seafront, so they suit nervous dogs that find the beach overwhelming.

Winters are quiet, with long empty beaches and strong winds, and dark afternoons that call for reflective gear. Sand Bay to the north is wide and flat, and tides can come in faster than you expect, so watch the water and your watch. Rinse your dog's coat afterwards to remove salt and sand.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Can I take my dog on Weston beach in summer?

Parts of the beach may have seasonal restrictions, so check the signs and the council's website before you go.

How do I stop my dog eating things on the beach?

Teach a firm leave-it, keep the lead on in the strandline and reward your dog for ignoring seaweed and rubbish.

Is Weston Woods good for off-lead dogs?

Many people use it that way, but wildlife and steep slopes mean recall must be reliable. Check signs and keep a lead handy.
