Where dogs walk
Keynsham Memorial Park, the River Chew and the fields around Saltford

Keynsham is a commuter town, with a steady flow of traffic on the roads between the two cities. Dogs here have to cope with rush-hour noise, buses and school-run congestion. A sit at every kerb and a loose lead on the inside of the pavement keep walks calm.

The River Chew flows through the town, and the Memorial Park beside it is where many local dogs have their daily exercise. Water draws dogs in, and after heavy rain the river runs fast and brown. A dependable recall away from the bank, and a "wait" before any water, are valuable.

Beyond the edge of town there are fields, hedged lanes and footpaths towards Saltford and the River Avon. Cattle, sheep and horses can all appear on these routes, so a lead near animals and a strong leave-it matter. Stiles and kissing gates are also good places to rehearse a "wait" and a steady pass-through.

Many homes are modern estates with small gardens and shared paths, where dogs meet each other at close quarters. Practising polite greetings and a quiet departure from the house prevents a lot of fence-line barking. Wet weather is common in the Somerset valleys, so a mat and towel at the door are worth keeping to hand.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Is the River Chew safe for dogs?

It can be at low water, but it rises quickly after rain. Keep your dog on a lead near fast water and call it away from steep banks.

What should I do if a dog meets livestock on a footpath?

Put your dog on a lead early, keep to the path and move away calmly. Never let a dog chase animals.

How do I stop barking at neighbouring dogs?

Reward quiet behaviour, avoid leaving your dog in the garden for long spells and teach a recall away from the fence.
