Where dogs walk
Salthouse Fields, Poets' Walk and the seafront

The seafront is busy on fine days, with families, ice creams and strolling visitors. A dog that can walk along a crowded esplanade without pulling towards food or jumping up at people is a pleasure. Choose a quiet morning to start, and use plenty of treats to reward a loose lead.

Many seaside towns have seasonal dog restrictions on their beaches, and some parts are closed to dogs in summer. Read the signs at each access point and check the council's website before you go. The shingle and mud are not suitable for every dog, and a dog that drinks sea water can get an upset stomach.

Poets' Walk and the hillside paths above the seafront are steep, with views across the estuary. They are lovely, but they ask a lot of the legs of an older or very young dog. A calm lead position and a "steady" cue on the descents will save you from being pulled off your feet.

The town has a number of Victorian villas converted to flats, and many houses sit close to the pavement. Dogs that bark at passers-by through the front window can be helped by a mat routine and a screen on the lower pane. Rain and sea wind are part of life here, so a towel by the door and a coat for short-haired dogs are sensible.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Are dogs allowed on Clevedon beach?

Seasonal restrictions are common at seaside towns, so check the signs and the council website for the current rules.

How do I stop pulling on the seafront?

Walk at a quiet time, reward every slack lead and stop whenever the lead goes tight. Gradually add more distractions.

Is sea water bad for dogs?

Drinking a lot of it can upset a dog's stomach, so bring fresh water and discourage gulping. Rinse salt from coats after paddling.
