Where dogs walk
Savages Wood, Stoke Brook and the Willow Brook paths

The town was designed with brooks, small lakes and strips of woodland running through the housing, so green space is never far from your door. That is good news for dog walks and a challenge for recall, because every path ends near water or trees. A solid leave-it and a whistle recall work well here.

Savages Wood is an ancient woodland reserve with paths, bluebells in spring and a lot of wildlife. Dogs should stay on the paths during the bird breeding season and be kept under close control. Check the signs, and teach your dog to check in with you regularly rather than ranging off through the trees.

Many homes are modern, with short drives, open-plan gardens and paths between the houses. Dogs that rush the front door when the postman calls, or bark at cats on the footpath, can be taught a calmer routine. A mat inside the door and a treat for sitting there whenever people pass is a good start.

Road noise from the two motorways and the main roads is a constant background. Most dogs ignore it, but a few are on edge, particularly in the evenings. Give a sensitive dog a quiet room, soft background sound and plenty of rest, and ask your vet if the anxiety seems severe.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Is Savages Wood good for off-lead walking?

It is popular, but keep your dog under close control and on paths, especially in spring. Read any signs at the entrances.

What should I do if my dog loves the lakes?

Teach a wait and a recall before it enters the water. Watch for algae in summer and keep your dog out if you see it.

How do I calm a dog that barks at passers-by?

Use a mat routine inside the door and reward quiet behaviour. Close the curtains or use window film if watching triggers barking.
