The ladder a good programme climbs
- Attention on you before any other skill.
- Position cues such as sit, down and stand, with a release word.
- Walking beside you without tension on the lead.
- Distance and duration for stay, added gradually.
- Proofing against doorbells, bikes, food and other dogs.
- Whether recall is practised on a long line in open spaces with plenty of distractions.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Why does the order matter?
Each skill supports the next. A dog that cannot hold a sit will struggle with a stay.
Can a programme be paused for holidays or illness?
Ask before you pay. Some trainers allow rescheduling and some do not.
Can this lead to a Kennel Club Good Citizen award?
It can. The Good Citizen scheme has Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, and some owners use a programme to prepare. Ask the trainer whether they work towards it.
Can recall ever be fully reliable?
It can become very dependable, but honest trainers do not promise perfection. Keep a long line handy in new places.
